Third Generation Plumber

Meet Dale Zager, Third Generation Plumber

Dale Zager is a third generation plumber and his history goes back to his Grandfather, Delbert Zager. Delbert, founded Zager Plumbing & Heating Services located in Washington, Iowa, a small rural farming community in the SE corner of the state.

Delbert Zager graduated from University of Iowa with his Mechanical Engineering degree and spent 3 years in North Africa during WWII with the Engineers. He later returned back to Washington, Iowa and established Zager Plumbing and Heating Services on July 17, 1950.

Dale has fond memories of his Grandfather's plumbing business which included a retail store front from the time he was a small Toddler and lived with his parents, in the apartment above the business. You could say, Dale Zager was born to be a third generation plumber.

Dale was continually involved in learning everything his Father and Grandfather could teach him about plumbing. This is where Dale learned so many facets of the diversified and wide range of knowledge and skills he has today. From residential to commercial, this small but large farming community had all the aspects of plumbing. This, combined with many years of knowledge and experience from his Grandfather and Father is what contributes to Dale's strong ability to design/build and solve any problem that arises outside of a plumbers normal scope of work.

Although, Washington, Iowa is a small community in general, it is quite large when you refer to the farming community. These farms could be located anywhere from the outskirts of town up to 50 miles away. Dale remembers those long drives to the farms where he worked on hog confinement misting systems, well pumps, duct work, furnaces and boilers. These systems needed to be up and running and there was NO time to be running back and forth to town for more materials. This is where Dale watched and learned how to make things work through the mechanics of plumbing. They figured it out with what materials they had on hand and designed and built on the spot as needed.

Dale's desire for carrying on the family tradition of plumbing was greatly influenced by both his Grandfather and Father. When Dale's Grandfather retired, Dale's father, Robert Zager took over Zager Plumbing and heating Services. Although, Dale was set out to be a plumber, he gave second thoughts to continuing on in Iowa due to the long, hard, cold winters. Broken pipes in the winter were all to common and Dale has vivid memories of spending 8 hours a day in a snowmobile suit, underneath mobile homes fixing broken pipes. With these conditions, Dale thought long and hard and in 1981 at age 19, he left Iowa and moved onto Florida.

The drive from Washington, Iowa to Deerfield Beach, Florida was long, but for every mile further from the harsh cold of Iowa, the easier the drive became. Dale arrived Florida in his Chevy Nova and $500.00 in his pocket. To no surprise, Dale immediately landed a job with a local mechanical contractor. He built city and county water and sewer plants, municipal sewage lift stations, domestic raw water, along with well field pumps and piping. Over the next few years, Dale continued his work with this mechanical contracting company which included being sent to the Bahamas for various large hotel/resort projects.

In 1984, at age 24, Dale received his State of Florida Certified Plumbing Contractors License (Master Plumber) and in 1989, founded Zager Plumbing Inc. which he later amended his name to Zager Plumbing and Solar Inc. The name amendment was to better reflect his accomplishments and scope of work offered. There is no project too small or too large that Dale Zager is unable to conquer.

Sadly, Dale's Grandfather, Delbert Zager, founder of Zager Plumbing & Heating Services passed away in 2007, but Dale gives great thanks to his Grandfather for the knowledge, skills and expertise he so genourously passed down, thus giving him the title of Third Generation Plumber.
